For someone not familiar, what would you say would be a project I should listen to to understand why he’d be put up there in reference to Dilla?
Modal Soul is one of my favorite Nujabes projects. Hydeout Productions 2nd Collection is heat too
Nujabes and Dilla are basically the fathers of the whole lofi hip hop genre. Like the music adult swim plays on the bumpers

If you into anime watch Samurai Champloo he did a large majority of the soundtrack. Thats where most of his fame came from. Only 26 episodes and it doesn't have the weird shyt you would see in alot of anime plus there is a good English Dub. But here are some tracks he has done:

Dilla introduced a new groove to music overall. The bounce in his beats has never been reproduced but imitated quite often.
Dilla hated when producers bit his style when he alive. He dislike the producers Dre & Vidal. Even after they openly admitted to him he was their influence.

Yeah I firmly believe he would be thriving right now and producing for a who’s who of artists

Dilla’s sound wasn’t just special but the feeling his beats have is what makes his sound so unique

How he chopped and sampled shyt was genius

Like his beats just have that instant head nod effect and you feel to your core/soul

Word? I didn't know about his dislike for them. They are dope in their own right. But I can understand Dilla's reasoning.
I recommend any dilla fan to purchase the book “Dilla Time”. It explains a lot about his life. Like for example “Donuts” was not created in the hospital. It was created in a studio. He was working on that album and the shining at the same time. He strictly used pro tools for all the tracks on Donuts.
