Worst thing that happened is that they heard that the deaths are affecting the elderly. That emboldened them even more.
american public school systems and colleges ingrained a lot of this stupidity so here we are today...

Where I am there is a firefighter is grave condition from the virus...so people just assuming because they are young they will be fine is insane. Each person will respond to the virus differently. Some will barely have symptoms others will have severe symptoms.
ETA: I would also like to add that I truly believe the only reason Trump has changed his tune is because of the stock market. If stocks weren't so heavily impacted by this, he would NOT care.

South Korea was able to contain it without resorting to extreme measures like China. The difference is unlike us they actually had enough testing kits, were well prepared and their citizens actually took it seriously and gave a fukk about each other
For the US, it’s a mix of an unprepared government, narcissistic millennials and Gen Zers who don’t want their lives inconvenienced and don’t give a fukk about passing it on to vulnerable people and putting a strain on the healthcare system, and Trump supporters who are still in denial about how serious this is because they’re convinced that warnings from actual scientists and experts are nothing but fake news and media hype.
I hope we can contain this thing, but considering everything I just mentioned, I doubt it. All you can do is try to keep your loved ones as safe and informed as possible.
Whats mind boggling is the same people who say "if you don't vote for this politician, you dont care about humanity", are the same ones who are out in highly populated settings spreading this virus..
