It’s not ahead of its time at all
What’s going on is nothing new
This dropped at the time of the Jena 6, Hurricane Katrina, inauguration of first black President, Sean Bell’s murder
Show me the videos and photos of protests throughout the whole world when Bell was murdered. There were barely a 1000 people protesting his death. I know social media wasn’t around, but we had cameras, news coverage, etc. The world has never responded to a murder by a cop like they currently are.
I’m 37 yrs old. I know this isn’t new. I don’t wanna reminisce and compare which murder was highlighted more or which natural disaster was covered more.
And if it’s nothing new where was the other mainstream rappers making this type of music and content?
The mixtape before this album was excellent too. This incarnation of Nas gave us Untitled and Distant Relatives. Timeless
Im talking whole albums not one or two songs. Ice Cube been on that since the 90’s and David Banner is in the same lane yet hardly mainstream, who else was releasing whole albums themed around the concept and topics Untitled were at this time period?
And no, this isn't disrespect to Nas, but if we're calling Untitled ahead of it's time, what are we calling these:
2Pac- Strictly 4 My nikkaz
Ice Cube- Death Certificate
dead prez- Let's Get Free
dead prez- Revolutionary But Gangsta
Goodie Mob- Soul Food
Goodie Mob- Still Standing
capMost of those albums dropped before 2000, when subject matter like that was normal.
2008 was a depression of mainstream quality, much less black power. Back when the southern dance crazes were the norm and people were on that "lyrics dont sell tip. Same time period where TI, Gucci Mane, Jeezy, and a ton of NY rappers dissing Nas for addressing white supremacy.
