I wouldn't call it pointless. It's still a gorgeous movie with some spectacular one-take sequences.

But the story is very basic and secondary to the film's technical achievements.

I'm waiting for The Counselor to leak. I'm looking forward to the movies coming out on Christmas day. Walter Mitty, American Hustle, and Out of the Furnace, even Dallas Buyers Club. I hope those get leaked sometime next month or so.
