But, they did a study on the alpha in chimp/bonobo populations. The alpha provided for and would go out of his way to look after everyone in their troop. If they didn't have enough food or bedding or didn't get proper grooming, the alpha would give food out of his portion, get extra bedding and would join in grooming sessions with other members of the troop. When the alpha aged and was no longer able to take care of himself, the females remembered and would take care of him.
Especially when everyone just gone call themselves “alpha male” anyway.
