Thoughts on a hoop earing for a male?

Ive had my left ear pierced since i was a kid but havent wore an earing on like 7 years. Im thinking about starting to wear a gold or silver(which is better?) hoop every once in awhile. Its hoop or nothing or maybe a silver stud
