Our perception of life is similar to the character in the movie Momento (movie synopsis). Similar to him (suffering from severe amnesia) we enter this world with no recollection of the events that preceded us. Like the movie character all we have around us are these 'notes' telling us things: The earth is not round, we are not the center of the universe, previous life existed on this planet and was wiped out, and we might be next. We have a limited window of 100 years to process that info and figure out new information for the next generation, before we no longer exist. The fact that everyone from this world 150 years ago no longer exists serves as proof of that.
What is the end goal? I think using our collective intelligence and ability to pass off the info enough times for a future generation to leave this planet and populate others before we are ultimately destroyed. The Permian-Triassic extinction and Cretaceous extinction serves as a reminder that the earth has a pattern of wiping out the dominant life of the planet and starting over. Similar to the therapsids and dinosaurs, we are the current dominant species threatened to be wiped out. For millennia the earth has produced creatures that have adapted to environmental conditions. For some reason we became a tangent, not only adapted to environmental conditions, but afforded the ability to process and understand these conditions.
Why do I use the movie memento as the example? Like him we have a limited window to do something with this information before we 'forget', whether that be through death, disease or war. Although we have the ability to pass down collective knowledge it is imperfect. War, disease and natural disasters can wipe out the collected info, forcing us to start over. The great library of Alexandria serves as proof of this. What information did we lose? How far back did we have to start over before we made it here? How much time to we have left? What notes will we leave for those in the future? Will they get it before they destroy each other? Will they be able to get out before the earth starts over again? Lets hope war, disease or solar flares don't wipe out all the collected info. Imagine how long it would take to start over again.
