Im not making excuses for him. Im saying that refs shouldn't go out of their way to make the game about themselves. If players are going to be a hero or choke, they should be allowed to do so unobstructed.

You're a baseball fan, this is no different than if an ump for some reason interceded in an at bat after a guy has fouled off several straight pitches. Then the next pitch he strikes out.

You can't say 100% the ump caused it, but it's likely he interrupted the players focus.
