My step pops is Turkish and I got a half Turkish brother.

His nephew works in the area worst affected and had his first day of annual leave today so wasn't in that area.

This shyt always hits harder when you see how it directly affects someone not just through a TV screen

I'm glad your stepcousin is okay, bro.

7.8 out of a possible 9 is a massive earthquake. Remember the richter scale is a logarithmic base 10 scale. So that means for every whole number it's 10 times the order of magnitude larger than the next number. Not only that but earthquakes have smaller and smaller after shocks after the big wave. In most other places even having a magnitude 6 earthquake is a huge deal. So imagine having that as an after shock. Those people had no chance.

By the way you're totally wrong in thinking those buildings are made out of paper mache and that they don't have good standards. That part of the world is very active in seismic activity and the local people have experience in building and designing against earthquakes. Where they fail is cutting corners during construction because these parts of the world have no oversight from government and local corrupt officials. A builder might skimp on rebar needed for anti seismic bracing.

I'm sure if a 7.8 earthquake hit the US a lot of parts would see massive destructions especially in a high density city.

That part of the world has a lot of ancient sites. A lot of their infrastructure is just built on top of previous civilization. In instanbul people would find houses and buildings under theirs. If this was to occur in Istanbul I imagine it would be 10x worse. Turkey is a beautiful country, amazing history, friendly people, and amazing food.
