shock value thread..and u should be negged to death...if not banned already
I just turned 42 ...and im a tell ya now....i was there...
nas ILLMATIC had horrible promotion.........
most of us didn't even know what he looked like...cause he had this lowkey aura bout himself which i liked ...cause ast the SOURCE says its like the second coming of RAKIM...
he didn't even perform at the SOURCE awards he came thier like he was part of mobb deep entourage and even stated how he had to borrow clothes to appear at the show...
he had no big budget whatesoever
YOU HAD TO SEEK NAS out........they didn't push him in yo face
he had no "diddy" in his corner...his video for halftime was easily under 50,000 to produce
hell it ain't hard to tell video was no better..they used performance clips from his first show to make up for content
he had no guest apperance or big name features..........he couldn't get any airplay for any of those tracks outside of nightime mix shows
i was working radio back then and had to litearlly promote the shyt myself just to bring attention to it........
ready to die on the other hand was well funded....you had clive davis whom just hit Puff off with a 50 million dollar advance to help start bad boy
and Juicy the lead single from Big's debut was a commercial success ...
illmatic was a backpackers wet dream.....it got more love on college radio (stretch and bobitto) than hot 97 and commercial stations...
cause jessica rosenbloom and columbia didn't participate in the "payola" plan that hot 97 and most commercial radio stations ran...
also the celebrated producers LARGE P...PREMIER and PETE ROCK along with QTIP did it out of the love..they weren't getting 6 figured placements for thier work.....
i had this same argument over the radio with former UMC rapper NYOIL who claimed the industry "conspired" to make Illmatic a classic...he was just jealous at the time
fukk outta here..if NAS was an industry plant then who ever was behind the scenes pulling the strings should be fired...cause ILLMATIC struggled to even reach gold years later after it's release...
