Phonk was coming up long before suicideboys. White nerds here and in europe (all them ebay tape resellers and yt remakers were in germany lol) were keeping that 90s 3-6 sound going for years. It popped up back hard thanks to blog era Juicy J run then dudes like SGP mutating it a bit for the soundcloud era. shyt died again but then all these Russian producers sped the sound up and added MORE cowbell and "drift phonk" was born. Tik Tok blew that up and spotify mislabeled it as phonk and now we here. A good breakdown:
