I don't know why they don't encourage feet first anymore. It protects your hands and it makes it easier to pop up and take another base in the event of a throwing error.

I also hope they start playing him more at DH. Protect him from all the wear and tear of catching.

Sliding head first technically gets you to the bag slightly faster. And most guys who don’t run great, slide head first to compensate the lack of speed. The problem is, that split second doesn’t justify the risk of getting hurt.
