Terrible thread and in no way accurate.
Tiger was number one in the world last year, was in the lead at the Masters, and took the penalty on 14 when his ball literally hit the pin and bounced back into the water. Jim Nantz called in a rules infraction on him, got him penalized, and Tiger lost the Masters. If that ball had been a 1/16th of an inch in either direction he would have had the monkey off his back right then and there.
As it was he won 5 tournaments last year, which is more than anyone else on tour.
Unfortunately, he injured his back, tried to play through it, and needed surgery. The fact that he came back from surgery a month quicker than his doctors predicted should tell you that he's back on that HGH. The fact that he went low on Thursday this week should tell you that he's capable of putting up a score still, if for some reason you need that proof.
The game has changed so much since Jack played, and Tiger is at the forefront of that change. He is, and always has been, in phenomenal shape. The materials that are used to make balls and clubs now put less of an emphasis on swing speed--not to mention the advent of hybrid clubs which allow for players to leave clubs like 1, 2 and 3 irons out of their bag, and still achieve the same distance and loft on their shots that would have been impossible just 30 years... even for a guy in his 60s! Yes, 60s: Tom Watson almost won the British Open 3 years ago and he's 64 years old now.
Tiger will easily surpass Jacks record, but he will do it at a later age than Jack did it, which unfortunately will allow talking heads to debate for eternity who was better, Tiger or Jack--and Jack's camp will be able to make a compelling (but wrong) argument that Jack was better because he played with more difficult equipment against better competition.
To say he's washed up, or will never win another tournament is just crazy though. Guys in here saying he should retire? wtf? He was just face down ass up on an operating table 3 months ago having his spine dissected... most of us would weigh 300 lbs and be sitting on the couch popping vicodin and playing Madden--this guy's trying to get back in shape to compete at a professional level in one of the four biggest tournaments of the year... and he still did better than the 2 major winners from this season: US Open Champ (Kaymer) and the Masters champ (Bubba, who didn't even make the cut).
Most analysts thought Tiger wouldn't even play this tournament, and that the PGA fits his game better and would be the ideal major for him to take a stab at this season, if he felt that he had enough in the tank to play. There's a WGC that Tiger should play in in 2 weeks, and then the PGA 2 weeks later... judge his season after that.
For some reason this site has always had a problem with Tiger because he's not some revolutionary, historical figure. He's a golfer for Christ's sake. You can't judge him by what you see written about him on ESPN.com... as a rule of thumb, any story with "Tiger" in the headline gets about 100x more clicks than any story about any other 5 golfers combined. ESPN is damn near obligated to write about every single round he plays. So when he has a shaky performance like this (especially in a major) there will be a front page story about it, and pretty much the only thing they can write about is him "struggling". He's not struggling, he's returning from surgery, and will be the number one ranked player in the world soon enough.
