Veerender Singh Jubbal

Apparently you cannot say/post, “Free Palestine,” on Tik Tok anymore.

The application that aided in people learning about an ongoing ethnic cleansing, genocide, occupation, and was used in courts to showcase Zionism is now somewhere you cannot say a basic for justice phrase of the devastation.

‪Jeff Fecke‬ ‪@jkfecke.bsky.social‬

It's almost like they were using you to get Trump elected.

3/25
‪Lili Peck‬ ‪@pochamoto.bsky.social‬

They’re so close to getting it.

4/25
‪Bodhi‬ ‪@bodhissatva89.bsky.social‬

Shocking. Why can’t you understand that you are the ones that helped a literal Nazi get elected and now when they find you no longer useful you get this. The disconnect is mind-boggling.

5/25
‪Bullwark‬ ‪@bullwark.bsky.social‬

Oh i thought maybe it was the people doing the genocide that helped elect him

Realizing you got played yet?

7/25
‪JottaPg‬ ‪@jottafrost.bsky.social‬

Hes not from USA

8/25
‪SpryOldLorax‬ ‪@spryoldlorax.bsky.social‬

He still got played.
Russian/Chinese propaganda pushing lies, half-truths, distortions, and spin in order to destabilize the West and destroy democracies.

LMAO you helped the fascist get elected

10/25
‪Seasonal Pun‬ ‪@pixelfish.bsky.social‬

I am begging folks to learn that people outside of the US before jumping in with the assumptions. The folks in this thread exhibiting Twitteresque behavior - V lives in Canada & is commenting on the effect for Palestine, not making notes on US politics.

11/25
‪Seasonal Pun‬ ‪@pixelfish.bsky.social‬

(Like why would you read this and jump to assuming he’s maga or a bot or PRC propaganda? Have known Veerender online for over a decade, and if you knew his fairly Twitter-famous history, y’all would feel silly. Ppl in other countries have different laws, internet experiences.)

Keyword reacts here.

12/25
‪Seasonal Pun‬ ‪@pixelfish.bsky.social‬

It does make me wonder how many of the folks replying are discourse bots bc of the keywords.

Some of the replies barely make sense.

13/25
‪Cheeba Jones‬ ‪@cheebajones.bsky.social‬

This was the entire reason it was shutdown, or at least given those threats.

Mitt Romney spilled the beans months ago. Israel was losing their propaganda war to the users on TikTok. Israel couldnt keep getting away w/ genocide so long a free discourse was taking place on that app.

14/25
‪PersianX6‬ ‪@persianx6.bsky.social‬

Israel was also losing elsewhere, like on Reddit. Than they co-opted R/worldnews in a big and bad way.

15/25
‪Michael Vokabre‬ ‪@vokabre.bsky.social‬

What people are immediately doing?
Of course they are blaming Jews for it, despite tiktok being the source for teaching the entire generation on how to conveniently hate Jews but progressively.

16/25
‪Lili Peck‬ ‪@pochamoto.bsky.social‬

Y’all got played like a violin. Enjoy the next 4 years.

17/25
‪Seasonal Pun‬ ‪@pixelfish.bsky.social‬

He’s Canadian. Re-read his post again and tell me where he said anything about the US politics specifically.

People outside the US exist. Palestinians exist.

@GeauxGabrielle
You cannot even search the word “fascism” on TikTok anymore. People are searching for info on Palestine, the L.A. wildfires, and even the Holocaust and being told to look out for “misinformation.”

We’re watching censorship and propaganda in real time.

@GeauxGabrielle
And if you search fascism now, the videos that DO pop up don’t seem to be made by any American content creators.

3/50
@LeftyLucky_
She warned us and it happened less than 24hrs later

[Quoted tweet]
This video is currently “under review” on TikTok. 🤨

We are now looking up “hitler” on tiktok. Some of you guys just don’t need to be in that app man.

5/50
@Ressniee
This got instantly taken down.

@HardlyTimes
Better stay on Rednote if you want to be informed .....

7/50
@arxhiiie
if you type fascism on your iPhone, it doesn’t come up as a suggestion.or if you spell it wrong, spell check won’t correct it

8/50
@posternuts
I’m done with Tik tok. It’s censoring everything that mattered and will become a right wing echo chamber.

9/50
@viri_roxx
What are you talking about? I just searched, I just took these right now (time stamped). The misinformation thing has ALWAYS been there. The only one that didn’t come up was the Hitler one but that didn’t come up before either, TT is weird about certain words and always has been (unaliving, drugs, etc)

And that’s why they are back

16/50
@mommyEllyx
To be fair, you couldn’t look up fascism on TikTok before all of this. I ran into that like a month ago

17/50
@SimplyAwakeX
Yeah the first 2 images are bad but i don’t really have an issue with the “rapidly changing event” notice.

18/50
@Trixxxy19
that's why it was a loss either way whether it was banned or not cuz censorship bout to get wayyyyyy worse now

19/50
@glittersnot
question but what’s wrong with telling users to be aware of misinformation? for instance, when i search for la wildfires i see conspiracy theories and ai videos of places burning that weren’t even close to the fire. i’d assume the other two subjects have just as much misinfo

all major platforms are under him now...

@HushBang
Still other apps we can use. Tons of apps. Just because they removed all those videos from tiktok doesn't mean they can't be reposted or posted on another app like rednote

42/50
@heyhilana
we truly are living in a censorship/propaganda era. it’s not to say people shouldn’t fact check what they see on tiktok because doing that is important, but the fact that we can’t even get info from tiktok anymore is disheartening to say the least.

43/50

@CloudKitte
Maybe, just maybe, it's because tiktok isn't a credible source of information, just people experiences and opinions.

48/50
@BuddieIsCinema
My TikTok fyp is still pretty much the same, thank goodness. Remember, TT has always been weird regarding censorship “unaliving” etc, yet folks with a message have always been able to get it out somehow. We are the algorithm. Keep talking ❤️🙏

49/50
@theyt0pic_
Soon as I got TikTok back I looked up LA fires cause it’s like .. I knew tht was coming .

50/50
@fitswimmer09
The app is no longer on my phone. The whole game was offensive to me.

The night before Donald Trump’s inauguration, hundreds of influencers crowded into an ornate two-story ballroom for a massive inauguration party sponsored by TikTok. The app was on the verge of being banned, but attendees were confident that Trump would swoop in and seize control.

“Trump is gonna save TikTok,” said Dan Joseph, a 21-year-old influencer who posts under the handle @furiouspatriot. “He’s already done so much for influencers.” Bryce Hall, a TikTok star with over 24.3 million followers, explained that Trump would ensure the app was sold off to someone MAGA-friendly, and soon the platform would be yet another powerful MAGA megaphone. Once Trump did that, “TikTok will be here forever,” he told me.

Many creators, previously banned on the app for spreading election denialism, misinformation, and extremist content, were excited about Trump’s plans. They laughed at the stupidity of Joe Biden for essentially handing Trump the keys to the most powerful social platform of our time. “TikTok is going to be a lot more friendly toward conservative influencers,” said Lance Johnston, a 23-year-old right-wing TikTok star who was previously banned from the app.

Less than a year later, everything that the right-wing influencers and critics of the TikTok ban predicted would happen has come to fruition.

The Trump administration is currently in the final stages of closing a deal that would hand over control of TikTok to a group of right-wing, pro-Israel billionaire investors like Larry Ellison and the Murdochs’ Fox Corp, who will undeniably leverage the platform to push pro-MAGA messaging.

The Ban, and Gaza Censorship
None of this had to happen. In 2020, Trump briefly floated the idea of banning TikTok via executive order, but quickly walked it back. There was subsequently zero meaningful threat of a ban until Oct. 7, 2023, after the Hamas attack on Israel and Israel’s ensuing genocide in Gaza. As more Americans began to hear first-hand accounts of the genocide and learn about Israel’s decades-long oppression of the Palestinians through social media, both Democratic and Republican lawmakers developed a new appetite for the ban.

“The bill was still dead until October 7,” Republican Rep. Mike Gallagher, a co-sponsor of the bill that banned TikTok, said on stage at the Munich Security Conference in February. Gallagher elaborated in an interview with the Hudson Institute, “After October 7th, I had Democrats on my committee coming to me, saying, ‘What’s going on with this? We need to take action.’” President Biden was immediately on board, and Biden’s White House aides even helped draft the bill.

Lawmakers in Congress rolled the ban into a package giving billions of dollars in foreign aid to Ukraine and Israel to ensure its passing. The bill that banned TikTok also banned funding for the UN Palestinian refugee agency known as UNRWA, an organization that provided crucial humanitarian aid and food assistance to Palestinian refugees. It was quickly passed by both the House and the Senate. Biden eagerly signed the bill into law.

“Some wonder why there was such overwhelming support for us to shut down, potentially, TikTok or other entities of that nature,” then-Senator Mitt Romney (R-Utah) said at an event last May. “If you look at the postings on TikTok and the number of mentions of Palestinians relative to other social media sites, it’s overwhelmingly so among TikTok broadcasts.”

It’s crucial to recognize what the TikTok ban was actually about – censoring pro-Palestine speech and controlling the narrative on Israel, rather than vague and unsubstantiated concerns about China – in order to properly understand the Trump administration’s goals for the app.

Under the structure of the new proposed deal, right-wing pro-Israel billionaires, including Oracle’s Larry Ellison, Michael Dell, the venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, private equity investment group Silver Lake, and Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch’s Fox Corp, the parent company of Fox News, will have majority ownership over the app. These new American owners would lease a copy of TikTok’s algorithm from its parent company, ByteDance, which would then be rebuilt and trained on US content by the US arm of the platform.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday called TikTok and other social platforms the most important “weapons” in trying to secure support for Israel on the right in the US.

The TikTok deal is the “most important purchase that is going on right now,” Netanyahu told US social media influencers. “I hope it goes through because it can be consequential.”

Just last week, the Jerusalem Post praised multiple members of TikTok’s new ownership coalition for their steadfast support of Israel. “Six Jewish billionaires have quietly become the backbone of Israel’s wartime funding and tech innovation,” the outlet declared, lauding Michael Dell and Larry Ellison. In September, Ellison briefly eclipsed Elon Musk as the world’s richest man after his net worth skyrocketed to $101 billion.

Control Over the Algorithm
Not only was the TikTok ban itself a massive infringement on the free speech of over 170 million Americans, but this new ownership structure will likely result in significant censorship and a shift in the type of content discoverable on the app.

Many content creators have said that TikTok is already enacting changes to be more friendly to the Trump administration. In recent months, left-leaning creators have been plagued by community guidelines violations and seen their videos removed without options for appeal. In July, TikTok named Erica Mindel, an American former Israeli military soldier and “proud Zionist” who has called the “security of Israel” an “issue of lifelong importance,” the company’s public policy manager of hate speech.

Once the transfer of TikTok’s ownership is complete, Trump and his MAGA-friendly billionaires will undeniably leverage TikTok to shape public opinion. TikTok’s recommendation system has long been the most powerful tool in shaping millions of Americans’ information diet. Under this new ownership, the app is poised to amplify right-wing ideology at a scale never before seen. No other social media platform currently matches the power and influence of TikTok.

TikTok’s new US-centric algorithm and ownership will cut off users’ access to global perspectives and could censor narratives that challenge US power or foreign policy. We could see even more restrictions on things like first-hand accounts of Palestinians in Gaza. The far right may also be able to leverage the app’s new MAGA-friendly policies to mint a new generation of right-wing media stars.

Anyone who questions how quickly a major social media app can be revamped in order to aggressively mainstream far-right ideology should look to X as an example. Under Musk, far-right extremists, neo-Nazis, and fascists of all sorts have been able to build robust platforms, monetize, and grow their brands. Musk leveraged the app to help boost Trump back into the presidency. We do not know what TikTok will look like after this deal goes through, but it will certainly not be the app that it was.

What we do know is that a powerful cadre of right-wing, pro-Israel billionaires and corporations will soon have direct control over what information 170 million Americans consume, and we can thank Joe Biden for that.

I have doubts about TikTok sustainability long-term. Facebook is a dead platform, and Twitter is full of trash. Eventually the next generation will dictated the next tech. trend. Plus Trump is losing popularity among Gen Z fast and Israel is seen now as a terrorist state that is committing genocide because the US is enabling it.

We will see.

Biden is only the blame because you clowns cried over it instead of letting his administration complete the deal all because of an obsession with China being some white hat.

Oh well. Use another app island stop crying.

Hes a large part of the blame he signed the law and allowed his party to push for the ban due to wanting to suppress gen-z reporting on Israel's war crimes.
Correct.

And the ultimate outcome is right wing billionaires controlling the algo

Biden is part of the blame.
Is this the point where we acknowledge that the TikTok algorithm isn’t organic, can be used for influence campaigns by foreign actors, act as a honey pot for others, and push anti American sentiments, thus accepting the premise of the TikTok ban in the first place?

Further, the TikTok ban was happening anyway. It was first pushed under Trump the1.0 and certainly would have been completed anyway.

We’re crying over spilled milk.
