i like these types of interviews where they talk about gear as well as the "philosophy" behind making music. the part where he was describing his mindset when coming up with drums, etc. good stuff.

on a semi-related note, i also watched that House music documentary last night (Pump Up The Volume) which was interesting as well.

What does he mean? He saying cats don't make beats anymore?

Making beats is just one part of being a producer. You have to be confident in working with an artist+ engineer in all aspects of the song making process ie. producing an actual record not just producing a beat... this means being involved in songwriting, artist coaching, vocal coaching.. etc.

Those soft skills or interpersonal skills is what makes a full scoped producer. Alot of the producing work these days is being done by some engineers because the producer is so removed from the creative process nowadays.

The best thing a producer can do is produce a talent.. take some local artist and be involved in everything and make them dope. Do that a couple times and you will have skills that put you a cut above the plethora of guys that can make dope beats on FL or logic
