(1) The examples are ALSO valid for the argument I am making...Because they are the BEST examples to show why "complexity" should NEVER be a valid argument against or for any form of artistic expression...
It is okay for one individual to say "Nas is better than Lil Reese, because Nas is more complex," but that opinion should NOT be valid when we having a GENERAL debate...
(2) Drill Rapping is like an "action movie"...The main characters have accepted their fate...They are savages, and that's how they are going to live...There are some subtle sub-plots, but the main thing is the "action"...That's all I expect from Drill Rappers...
So, an album like Lil Reese's "Don't Like" is a CLASSIC...Because if you want to know what drill rapping is all about, that's the VERY best drill album that has been released to date...10 songs and they are all BANGERS...Period.
Depth and Complexity are not ALWAYS good for artistic expression...Sometimes there is just pure anger and rebellion with NO justification...
It's like blackness in the scientific definition...An absence of colour...Just pure darkness with no complications...That shiit is beautiful in its own right...
(3) I am not arguing HISTORY...I am arguing against the validity of using complexity as a legitimate measure of quality in general debates...It's okay to have that opinion as an individual, because complexity has its own artistic merits, but in a general debate I don't think it is a strong counterpoint...
Lil Reese's "Don't Like" is a CLASSIC because (A) in the context of drill music, that is the best you will get, I have actually had a couple of people ask me "what is that you are playing and can you give me a copy when I play that album" (B) Lil Reese's savage persona is very convincing on that album...
But when you listen to "Life Is Good", do you really feel like celebrating life...? Do you feel like driving around in the summer with top down while smoking a cigar and enjoying and being inspired by all the beautiful colours and bright skies...? When you listen to "Life Is Good" do you feel like your IT certificate, 6 figure salary and a PAWG is all you need in life...? Do you feel like you are WINNING when you listen to "Life Is Good"...?
Put the Nas fanship aside, and just think about how well does that album actually make you feel like life is good...Many people don't get that feeling when they listen to that album...I like some songs here and there, but that album doesn't make me feel like I am WINNING...
And that's why Supa Savage and Don't Like are better albums...They make me feel like joining a street gang even though, I am a 27 year old with a professional career...But Life Is Good doesn't make feel that way, even though, I am REALLY winning in life...
That's the point...Complexity has nothing to do with it...
