Tennis.

In a long 5-setter, if the opponents serve is too big/on point, there's no need to spend precious energy trying to hit every ball back. Spend that energy trying to hold your own serve instead.

That and if the set is basically over 5-1 and they're on serve, just let that set ride and start the next set on serve

In the World Cup of Soccer.

Scenario: 'Group A runner-up' faces 'Group B winner' in round of 16

Theoretically if BRAZIL is somehow the Group A runner-up, it is probably advantageous - if you can do it safely - to manipulate the scoring so that you finish second (runner-up) in your own group, and face somebody else in the round of 16.

NCAA basketball

Scenario: Your an unpaid college basketball player generating untold thousands, maybe millions, of dollars while your family lives in a dangerous housing situation and struggles to make ends meet.

If you are offered money to do so by high-end bookies/gamblers, allowing your opponent to score might be advantageous to your overall life situation. Known as point-shaving. But it's your ass if the NCAA finds out.

Japan, but from the 989
The Lions in the first three quarters. After that it's field goals and three and outs. They have an aversion to scoring touchdowns in the 4th quarter.

In wrestling it can benefit you to let the other person have an escape so you're both in the neutral position. An escape is only worth 1 point while a takedown is worth 2, so you can keep getting takedowns and letting the other person escape to run up the score if you're better than him on your feet.

North Jersey but I miss Cali :sadcam:
Last game of the year and a starting pitcher gets a 2 million dollar bonus if he finishes the season with an era under 4.00. His era is currently 3.99 with the bases loaded with 2 outs bottom 5th. You found out he tried to holla at your girl and you come in to relieve him.

You intentionally give up a bases clearing double knowing it would raise his era :shaq:

In ice hockey, it is not advantageous in terms of a game. It is advantageous in the bigger picture of things when you want to lose your way to the bottom of the league to get a higher draft pick.

The order is determined by the standings at the end of the regular season, but with one team winning the NHL Draft Lottery and moving up 4 picks in the draft order. Teams at the bottom of the regular season standings are more likely to win the lottery.

This is what the GAWD Sampras used to do

He'd spend 1 or 2 games a set trying to break, he'd relax during the rest of the service games
