The quality of your music and your image will determine how far you'll go. Having an unique and hot sound with a decent image would immediately separate you. Next, you have to know who your target audience is and then cater to that base. It's ok to experiment with a couple of songs but don't drastically change your sound(unless the sound don't work or people are tired of it... you may have to when people get fatigued because other artists/producers are swag jacking.. and it will happen). Stick to your bread and butter. Eventually the word will get out.

Anyone worth exploiting that is hot enough will see label deal offers come their way. You can either sign or BYOB(Be your own boss). Both has it's advantages and disadvantages.
