Worst jump in noticeable graphical advances between generations in console history...I'm not apart of, and barely even understand the nerd rage console wars over the negilible differences between x1 and ps4...but the lack of distance between the 360 version and the pc version (that's supposed to be way more powerful than both new consoles) makes me less excited for the whole generation of systems...what's the time between 360/ps3 and x1/ps4 like the longest ever? Why don't the graphics look way better than the previous generation? Is it because I'm older and less discerning or something, or there like a real life technical explanation for this...i've seen absolutely nothing that's wowed me and made me want to cop one of these systems

polygon count used to drive the progression of graphics but that's hit a plateau.
now it's all about simulating how light behaves and making things like skin look "real" in a game but that is hard to do.
in real life the light is not just bouncing off things...some gets absorbed by the object and sometimes there are varying degrees of translusentness...skin is a great example of this.
