Ironically, you did exactly what the quote was accusing the character of doing.
Listening to someone and “hearing” what they’re saying are two different things.

You can listen to what someone says but not read in between the lines. I can ask my woman how her day was and she can respond “it was ok, and yours?” On the surface level, nothing is wrong.

But I can “hear” something is wrong is wrong if she responds to me like that. Again, it’s about reading between the lines. Sometimes it’s more about what someone doesn’t say than what they do say.
