You would be shocked how much that sensationalism works. I'm one of the few people in my family who's views of sexuality has developed past the 1940s and I'm one of the few in my family that does not believe homosexuality is totally unacceptable, or that homosexuals try to force other to be gay. But most of my family is ignorant af and been believing the same shyt about life since they was children
My sister moved to Arizona almost entirely because she was getting caught up in all this hype about the government and people of NYC inviting transgendered people to schools, therefore "pushing" "forcing" "indoctrinating" her children into being gay or transgendered. She also got all caught up in the anti-vax anti-mask bullshyt during the height of covid.
They fed into that shyt hook line and sinker, plus my brother in law has this bizarre obsession with owning guns. He's not a hunter or a sportsman, he just thinks guns are cool and wants to own and collect them and shoot them...and no he's not white. Black man.
Now that she lives in a house in Arizona she's suddenly talking all this "America is the best place ever" exceptionalism crap. I use to joke about how racist the south is with her, thinking she still socially conscious, but I stopped cus I saw she really dont like it no more. She believes NYC is being taken over by transgendered people with the goal of indoctrinating children, but she wants to believe so badly that white racism in the south is whats overhyped and overplayed by people in the media.
She's also become one of those passive Republicans always watching black right wing leaning pro-gun youtubers telling her what to believe about liberals and Democrats, and she's always throwing shots at Biden and only Bide . Ultimately I think she just doesn't vote tho. Growing up my sister always had this passive resentment towards protesting and social issues, and at no point in her life did she ever show personal genuine concern for big issues of racism or the betterment of all black peole. The type that would roll her eyes when it's time to learn about Martin Luther King on his day cus all she care about is getting a day off. The type that would straight up say "nah" if you tried to get her in on any social movement. She always wore afro centric stuff, loves black culture, and I CANNOT imagine her hanging out with white girls...at all. She only hangs out with black folks. But she just always looked down on "wokeness" like it's just annoying.
She begs me to move over there but I can't say I have any interest living in a place where everyone owns guns and gets pissed off if people are "too loud." Seriously I was there in the middle of June and the sight of kids running around and people playing in their yards is so rare because keeping the neighborhood dead silent 24/7 is what's custom with these boring gun toting hicks.

I thought my family was much smarter than this but covid and Trump just made people who were susceptible to stupidity embrace it with conviction. Right wing culture wars do work on shallow people who dont actually get government or politics at a core level.

If the Democrats can be smart and strategic they can still do some things with Republicans having a slim majority. We will see how it goes I guess.
