This proves what I posted in another thread. The Coli has an obsession with TM101. I've seen people attempt to re-write history just to put this album up in GOAT ranks.
1) People make it like Jeezy was some master lyricist on this album. That couldn't be further from the truth. It's the worst aspect of the album. The biggest appeal(s) of the album are the production, ad-libs, and Jeezy's charisma.
2) People claim that TM101 popularized the trap sound. FALSE. This album is a part of the evolution of the trap sound. The trap sound gets it's roots from all over. You have Memphis (DJ Paul & Juicy J, Suave House), New Orleans (DJ Toomp even states that he based T.I.'s "Dope Boyz" off Master P's "Bout It" and "Break Em Off Somethin'), the Midwest (some of the production that Traxter was laying down for Twista has trap elements), and Atlanta (Goodie Mob, Ghetto Mafia, Cool Breeze).
All of those sounds were influential on what DJ Toomp was building for T.I. T.I. came out with
Trap Muzik. "Be Easy" from
Trap Muzik influenced Shawty Redd who in turn created the sonic blueprint for Jeezy's
Trap or Die (which is much more influential on the trap sound than TM101). That sound was also prevalent on TM101. Fast forward five years later and along comes Lex Luger. Now people claim he bit Shawty Redd, but whatever the case, it's Luger's sound that eventually evolved into EDM Trap.
3) What we have is people either having a case of amnesia or just blotting out the existence of
Trap Muzik (and other trap albums and artists) altogether just to make a claim that TM101 popularized trap music.
The biggest point is that TM101 doesn't come close to the caliber of an album like Illmatic.
It isn't anywhere as lyrical, impactful, or influential. The only arguments are in regard to production and pretty much personal preference. Anything outside of that is just
.
