people tried to eat off mad men's period piece success. i think that is pretty much dead now. same with "bad man" dramas in general. i never expected much from this show to begin with

Period dramas aren't dead. Like 8 got bought this season on different networks. And Antiheroes are definitely not dead. We have Frank Underwood and a slew more coming on new cable dramas.

Mad Men's success!? Don't get me wrong, in no way does Mad Men suck but AMC expected a lot more out of Mad Men in terms of popularity. Breaking Bad pretty much made MM sit shot gun.
And Mob City was trying to eat off the Walking Dead.

critical success and they charge a high rate for ads on the show in spite of the less than stellar ratings. apparently the demographic they own is premium, so they get the more lucrative car ads and what not. it's going so well AMC wont let the show end, i think they announced like another two seasons and counting. flagship quality shows that are high brow but dont set ratings records on cable budgets are very sustainable, on networks not so much.

im pretty sure shows like pan am, mob city, vegas, and boardwalk empire were meant to tap into a couple of AMC's winning formulas to varying degrees (mad men, breaking bad) and they are learning that those formulas are reaching their expiration date

Shouldn't have came on right after the ending of Boardwalk Empire. They probably had the best season period, and they dropped a medicore show in the same category.

I don't know about that whole high rate ads thing. The only thing that is considered a premium audience is the 18-49 demographic. That's what networks pay attention to most.

As far as them keeping Mad Men around, well, they have to. Breaking Bad is done and Low Winter Sun never worked out as they hoped. Plus they saw how well the last season of Breaking Bad worked out(with them splitting it into 2) that they followed the same formula.

Again, not to diss MM.
