Pretty much any Hispanic family is going to be multilingual within a generation, so objectively I don't see this as much of an issue.

What Brokaw really means is that "they need to try to be less threatening to old white folks". Being a black man, this type of thinking just isn't something I'm gonna be sympathetic to.

In Canada in many government jobs it is a requirement to be bilingual. Was making the comparison that if it goes that way in America than it will put a lot of ppl behind the 8 ball so to speak.

But it is not as simple as just learning a new language.

Wait...you actually think the language training you learn in schools makes you bilingual?

To become bilingual in a second language it takes about 600 hours of in class training.

That’s a lot of time. Sure the kids in school NOW will have a head start in becoming bilingual but it does nothing for the adults now that may require it. Some ppl just don’t have time to put aside ten hours a week for over a year straight to learn a second language.


Again, I have nothing against bilingualism. My point is that ppl just can’t become bilingual. It’s not easy and it’s very time consuming.

I think it’s great that all kids learn a second language in school. And they should hopefully continue that through out their whole lives. But many ppl did have that start.

The more necessary it becomes the easier it will be. That's probably why some people don't see assimilation. When there's enough to be comfortable the need to change becomes less urgent
