Theres a level of grit that Thibs offers. It's not guaranteed another coach gives that this roster has Alot of playoff risers but eh we need a kiss of more depth a McDaniels type or a Reeves... offensive sets could be way better and cleaner , rotations ALL over the place.. his defensive concepts are best in the league and he could probably make a colibreh a plus defender for stretches but idk
I'm not totally against him coming back loyalty for the ECF run, but he needs to revamp his staff and offensive principles, I really think the nuggets can be a blueprint for offensive identity, Celtics are down next year east can be wide open let's retool and try again.

Regardless of who your coach is, it’s hard to win championships in the NBA when your two best players can be picked on defensively

I do think a lot of Thibs teams have been regular season overachievers who get exposed in the playoffs but I’m not sure I’d group this Knicks squad with that

one thing that was jarring to me was how he had the Knicks on for so long despite being up 30+ against the Celtics in game 6.
it's like he was dropped on his head as a child or something. he learned nothing after ruining Rose's career

Do you think the Knicks win the ECF with another coach?

Because I think another coach could be the way to go. Then again, NY had a lot of turnovers and bad fouls in this series. Maybe that’s on the coach for not emphasizing focus. Maybe that’s on the players for not executing well.

This is an oversimplification but it seems to me like depth was a weak point for the Knicks in these playoffs.

Yes. not even getting a split at home is unforgivable

thibs has clear flaws as a HC that we all know about but i dont think the Knicks could get another coach who would improve the team or get them further than the ECF
Thibs has his issues with being slow to adjust offensively and leaning too heavy on his starting 5, but I can’t think of a team that won a title where both of their 2 best players were horrible on defense and both got picked on all series. Brunson and KAT just couldn’t stay in front of their guy no matter who it was. The only offenses better than the Knicks this year were Cleveland, Boston, Denver, and Oklahoma City. There’s only so much better they can get on offense.

They were 14th in defense this year on the other hand and the pacers averaged 127 points in their 4 wins this series. That’s what the Knicks need to be focused on addressing. You’re not winning if you have to average 130 points. The only teams this millennium to win the title without a top 10 defense have been the 2001 lakers, the 2018 warriors, and the 2023 nuggets. There’s a limit to where you can go without a great defense.

You make good points.
Still, there were moments where it felt the Knicks couldn’t create space for good shots.

Brunson was swarmed all series and while he was able to make difficult shot after difficult shot, he often had to do so by holding the ball for most of the shot clock and rushing to beat the buzzer. Similarly for Towns.

Or maybe I am remembering things wrong.

No, they did lack some movement offensively, but the pacers really stuck to the Knicks players on and off the ball. Knicks did a poor job setting screens this series and they really had to work to beat the on ball defender regardless of who it was. They made a lot of tough shots all series long to stay in games.
