They likely made all types of plans for what would have been the first summer he was home with his children since they were born. Instead he came back to do...what exactly. Let be honest with ourselves. There are some people who just don't have that family mindset inside them. Tom's life for the most part has been football. Once he got a taste of normal family life with being home all the time with the wife and kids, he said fukk this and went back to the game and secured himself a gig once he retires again. Football is all he knows and he's not ready to give it up yet. Who know what happens to him once he retires for good. Some people have a hard time adjusting to life after football and he maybe one of them very soon.
