In space, the trajectory of an object can be changed with small amounts of force, because of the nature of a near frictionless environment. This is why you don't need rocket boosters in space, and jets of pressurized gases/liquids can do the trick.
With the amount of NEOs, you will be happy if they can get this to work properly. An extinction level asteroid is MUCH smaller than you think.
