Cody coming back in 2017 or 18 wouldn't have hit like it did post AEW. The first 6 months of Dynamite was proof Cody could be a legit top babyface, they were getting a mil a week viewers with him as top babyface and he was getting 100% cheers and getting unknown guys over.
Way more people saw that than what he was doing in NJ/ROH. Also notice hos character is the same now as it was in AEW and they reused the MJF angle with Rock last yr
