400 degreez was a slow burn. it wasn't on the source's radar when they did this issue.

if they reviewed it prior to this, they prolly gave it 3 1/2 mics or something.
they never gave high-rank to relatively new artists that didn't make music that appealed to their purist sensibilities.

by the time guerrilla warfare dropped tho, they had to give it that 4 1/2 and pump-fake like they were making a profound statement, when in reality, they were behind the ball & trying to save face.

that's why I be telling yall, f*ck these magazine ratings.

why single out master p instead of some of this other stuff that wasn't even hot??

they got yall fighting amongst yourselves.

they used to jip master p out of mics and snub him too when he was first blowing up. ice cream man got 3 mics, and he was left off that best of '96 cover despite outselling half of those artists listed while being independent.

400 Degreez dropped late '98, which is why it wasn't on the list. Many fronted on 400 Degreez at first because "Ha" sounded nothing like anything else out. Everybody was on the bandwagon by the time the song below dropped:

People slept on Big Tymers' "Big Ballin", Juve's own "Follow Me Now", and they weren't even up on B.G.'s "Cash Money Is An Army" (I remember Tech Money from MTV coming to 97.5 ATL plugging this song around the time "Ha" took off and saying CMR had next).

P wasn't jipped out of mics. The Source stayed having No Limit on their covers. In 1996, him being left off the best of cover wasn't really a snub. There was a lot from '96 that was bigger than Ice Cream Man. XXL is the only media outlet besides Murder Dog (and they were on P way early) who were bold enough to put P on a cover (though the same issue also had a Jay Z cover and I think that was his first cover as well).

He was on Priority at that point.

yea

but it was an independent dealing.

youre right.

I thought it dropped in September or October.

my point still stands tho. they wouldn't have included it anyway at that point, until he got his name value up.

yea I always say it was a slow burn. but you cant blame the public for that.

they should've dropped something else before the album to let people know juvenile could really rap and he wasn't some novelty gimmick.
"follow me now" came months later. and while it showed that he could rap, the song was meh to most people. but they put that BG video out at the same time. that's the song that made me sit up and begin to take notice.

I had never even heard of the big tymers until guerrilla warfare dropped and they were on 'hot girl'.
in 2000, after I was surprised at how great IGTW was, I went back and copped "how u luv that vol 2" thinking it was one of the underground albums that they re-relased. I didn't know until recently that it was a major release from the gate, and it was the first major release for cash money.
MAN that was a bad idea. big tymers had no business coming out first. looking back, cash money made a lot of bad decisions. it didn't matter cuz they were on fire(pardon my pun) but they could've been even bigger. especially juvenile.

what that gotta do with the mics and the example I gave??

It has a lot to do with mics. They weren't just going to potentially destroy a lucrative relationship with No Limit by intentionally downplaying their music. It doesn't make business sense.

Personally, I would have rated ICM higher, but in 1996, I get why they didn't. You don't necessarily want to be the in the position of handing out a stellar review to novelty. I don't really see them understanding "Bout It Bout It". Then there's the whole originality thing and that played a high role in their ratings. Mystikal, who was also from New Orleans, didn't get a good rating either and he prided himself on being an MC. I think Mind of Mystikal also got 3 mics.

Between Jay and X for me. I chose Jay today but maybe would pick X tomorrow. At the time though I definitely played Mase and Lauryn the most. fukked with Pun and Kast heavy too. Great year in hip hop, and I was 12 at the time so I was really just growing into the shyt. Probably the first year of me really understanding the music I was listening to.
