Caught myself thinking about Dr. Molefi Asante's 100 Greatest African Americans and it got me thinking who I would put on my list. It's real tough once you try to bring the number down to 10 or so. So who you got as your top 5 AfAms, using any criteria you wish.

If I'm picking my personal Mount Blackmore of 5 I'm going to have to go with (ordered alphabetically)...

1) Dr. Charles Drew

2) Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

3) Thurgood Marshall

4) Barack Obama

5) Oprah Winfrey

Ugh...so many honorable mentions that I don't want to even start.

So, what do you have against my list? Who is in your top 5?

W.E.B. Du Bois

i was reading about the Atlanta race riot of 1906 and he said:

"I bought a Winchester double-barreled shotgun and two dozen rounds of shells filled with buckshot. If a white mob had stepped on the campus where I lived I would without hesitation have sprayed their guts over the grass."

A Winchester rifle should have a place of honor in every black home, and it should be used for that protection which the law refuses to give.

Personally

Dr. King is Dr. King.
Du Bois for really birthing the idea of African American society. He had c00nish tendencies but really made us a "people".
Elijah Muhammad. I don't like that he gets turned into a God but he created a framework for brothers that's saved hundreds of thousand of lives.
Angela Davis for reinvigorating the warrior queen.
Michael Jackson most popular AA of all time and was extremely pro-black and African.

Honorable mentions

Nat Turner
Muhammad Ali
Noble Drew Ali
Assata Shakur (Naming my first daughter assata if i have one.)
Malcolm
Carter G Woodson
Langston Hughes
James Baldwin
