I just remember on wayans brothers when Marlon was singing for change and Shawn said "get up Tracy Chap lips" shyt had me dying

I dont think Tracy Chapman was rejected by the black community so much as she was rejected by the music community as a whole. Im sure she was seen as "unmarketable" despite her talent.
A BLACK female artist who has no sex appeal for men and performs acoustic guitar music with an emphasis on humble lyrics over flash and controversy. She was so far removed from the music and pop culture sensibilities of the 90s its no wonder she got drowned out and rejected by radio, MTV, and even BET which preferred sexy flexy R&B music and gangster rap at this time.
The fact she even managed to strike a record deal is a testament to her musical talent.
Chapman is a true folk artist and folk artists are suppose to reject overt commercialism of their music. I doubt she herself wanted the clout and the attention.
Folks gotta understand even 2pac did it for the money. Its very rare you get true music artists who are in it for the art, and she was one of them. I wish the black community would acknowledge her more. Can we at least get an Unsung special? She truly is a forgotten genius of our musical community.
Wrong. That had nothing to do with it.The overwhelming majority of Black Americans belonging to some sort of religion and Tracy being an atheist and open lesbian might have something to do with it
Some of her songs do go hard.
Black Community never really fukked with Terrence Trend D'arby neither breh, both are amazing black artist.

"give me one reason" was a huge single in the 90's. my grandma (god bless her soul) use to love this song
