And Dr. McHugh is well known for being anti-transgender, a few of his studies are opposed to some more modern research.
He's brilliant though. I don't know where I stand on the issue based on Scientific Philosophy. It seems as if societal influences are trying to create a kind of paradigm shift in scientific views of transsexuality.

You bolded is 98% of the issue. The entire Transgender discussion has stepped quickly inline behind "and now in front" of historically prevalent marginalized humans as demographics. The open mindedness required to accept that structures are real and oppress certain people more "blacks" and the follow on narrative and dialogue in the past 3 years or so....has created a bridge to the LGBT community. That bridge is called intersectionality...a favorite these days. "My struggle is just like your struggle"....and since people are open minded for acceptance...they will accept the rhetoric. Scientific Philosophy? When you cut through the bullshyt....it's all feelings..."I feel like this inside" etc. That's not scientific, that's personal. Some feelings are associated with disorders...which is scientific, and to that regard the good doctor is correct in his simple explanation.

My thing is if your brain contradicts with reality, there's a problem. For example people who suffer from anorexia believe they are fat even if the physical reality is they are egregiously underweight. That is a problem. If you are a man and think you are a women to the point where you even hate to look at yourself, you have a clear significant mental problem. Your mind is not in pair with reality. People are trying to make this about feelings when it's not. It's as simple as what is the reality of the world.

Sex isn't binary. It's a spectrum, most of us land further on one side than the other but some land somewhere in between. If you have XY chromosomes you are generally male. If you have XX chromosomes you are generally female. Some people however have XXY chromosomes. Dudes who have an extra X chromosome have feminine traits, women with a Y chromosome have masculine traits. This is just a simplistic example based only on chromosomes but as usual it's more complex. Some of it may be purely psychological, but to deny there are physical reasons is patently false.

And that's why I get annoyed af when people get so angry about it. Very few of the things we cling to and regularly refer to as parts of our identity are solid concepts that have existed since the dawn of mankind.

Trans-ness is baffling to me in that I don't know how someone with ONE lived experience defined by their appearance and society's understanding of that individual's gender/sex can be so resolute that they really belong to the "OTHER" one- but in itself, changed performance of a trait and updated norms include just as much "real" as "made-up" parts.(Is it also a pretty privileged reality to be able to financially/medically alter your identity and have it stick? Sure)
But my confusion or inability to relate doesn't give me any rhyme, reason or right to oppress you.

I could be wrong, but didn't Rome and Greece have pretty significant numbers of "free loving gay activity" across the apex of those empires? The cultural and societal priviledge is amost a requirement breh. In other places they simply don't have time for the bullshyt, I yam what I yam....now on to the surviving. This entire Western/US society is disturbed honestly. Fat, spoiled, and bored 75% of the time and attention seeking addicts. This sexuality issue and it's rapid morphism as of late is direct result of the environment it is cultivated in.
