I saw this post and wanted to address it, because it brings up an interesting discussion. I'm definitely an ally of the LGBT community, and I support anyone that wants to make a physical change to match how they feel inside. There are people that truly feel trapped in the body of the wrong sex, and I hope there's more acceptance for them as society moves forward. I believe there will be.
As far as this particular issue, I am torn. I've been involved in combat sports and MMA since 1999, and in martial arts period since the late 80's/early 90's. There's a reason that male and female MMA fighters are put in different divisions. And even though Fallon Fox is a woman, she was born a man. She lived a large part of her life with a larger bone structure, a larger muscle to bone ratio, etc. I do have some safety concerns about her fighting in a ring or a cage with a woman that has lived her entire life as a woman. I'm not saying I'm not cool with it, but it should be allowed to be discussed. For those of us that do combat sports and MMA, it's an important issue to figure out.
Fallon Fox should be allowed to participate in sport and have just as much right as anyone to do so. having her in a men's division is clearly not the solution, as she's not a man. But we do have to admit there are more safety issues with Fox fighting other women than there are when 2 women that have been women their whole lives are fighting each other. MMA and sport science professionals much smarter than me have been concerned about Fallon Fox for a while now. Joe Rogan and Ronda Rousey have also discussed it.
I don't think it's transphobic to have this discussion. Because this isn't a sport like basketball or baseball. The entire goal of MMA is based on using your body to damage another person's body until that person gives up or can no longer continue, or time runs out. Other sports there is physical contact for sure, but it's secondary to the goals of those sports. Combat sports inherently involve using your body as a weapon, and if your body is a bigger/stronger more powerful weapon, there are some concerns there, no? I mean it;s the same reason we have weight classes. Size in a fight matters. A small person can beat a bug person easily if they have training, but two equally skilled people? Size and strength is huge!
I will say that her opponent signed up knowing damn well what she got into, and I do think Fox should be allowed to fight in women's divisions. If people don't want to fight her they don't have to. Her opponent knew the risks and fought. But I think the general public deserves a little more leeway on the "transphobic" label when it comes to combat sports.
