Transparent Avatars

What format does an image have to be to make our avatar background transparent (like the smilies)

I got a .png file that looks fine, but when uploaded the white boarder comes back

i saved mine as a .png, uploaded it through imgur and it came up transparent

sometimes some images are not true transparent .pngs but saved as .pngs with a white background

I figured it out...it was a true transparent...I just had to play with the dimensions.

The ones u put up are nice...Im saving those.

I understand everything Im doing, shyts look clean. Tested em on my end, clean. I upload to forums and white box

I think I found my problem ---- B) The dimensions of the smiley are too big. They need to be less than 100x100 pixels. I would use 99x99 to be safe.
