And someone like Vanessa Williams is? Both of her parents identify as black, but they both come from a long line of mixed raced people. She did a DNA test recently and she came back 52% black and 48% white.

Vanessa is obviously Multigenerational Mixed but politically she is black. Her parents come from a period where there was no other option as well as Vanessa. Today she could identify as something completely different.

I can say that for myself, yes, even if my background may be different to other African Americans. You're right, experiences are different, but my experiences made me more inclined to identify with my African American back ground rather than my Ethiopian back ground. All I did was grow up around other African Americans, my phenotype may lean towards more East African, but I don't claim that side at all. Am I different to an African American? No, I don't think so. I'm just anotha project chick who's makin her way. African American is the identity I chose and no one can ever take that away from me.
