USATODAY:Sgt. Ron King was leading a target practice with two other officers and a civilian when he pulled out the Trayvon Martin targets on April 4, officials said.

The event was held at the Brevard Community College campus in Cocoa, and all the officers were on duty at the time, according to Walsh.

The two officers claimed they declined to use the targets, and there was no indication King used them.

"Whether it was his own stupidity or his hatred, we don't know," Walsh said. "However, on any level it is not acceptable for us or anyone in society to act this way."

Walsh said he became aware of the incident Thursday, a week after the chief of police initiated an investigation.

King has seven days to appeal his termination, but Walsh said the city has no intention of accepting an appeal.

According to officials, King purchased the targets online.

"Using a dead child's image as target practice is reprehensible," said a statement from Benjamin Crump, the attorney for Martin's family.

Zimmerman admitted to fatally shooting Martin after a fight in his suburban neighborhood, but claimed the shooting was in self-defense.

He is currently out on bond and awaiting trial scheduled to begin in June
