I usually hear good things about Trinidad and Tobago it’s usually Jamaica that has the rough rep

I don't have the stats, but I think they're not that far off from Jamaica when it comes to murder rate. I guess you hear less about Trinidad due to less tourism

The gang violence is insane.

I’ve been working on projects with Trini police on police training and gang investigations over the last couple years. My company had a prosecutor, a black guy from the Ohio (@smitty22 @Illeye buckmatic), embedded within the special investigations team. Long story short, there’s no standard processes, no idea how to gather evidence, protect informants, witnesses, etc under the anti gang law from 12-13 years ago. He was able to get 5 cases charged under it in a year. They had only gotten 7 charges in 11 years under that law.

The murder rate being high has been endemic since 2008.

Also, 2025 is an election year. Prime Minister Rowley has been in charge for a decade now. He’s definitely trying to show he’s doing more.

Is the solution, making the the prison so deplorable that the fear alone will negate crime?

Certain prisons don't even have prison gangs because they are so locked down, like military establishment.
