One of the goat genres.
I always found the genre kind of hard to pin down, but thats just me. Like I really can't tell where the genre itself starts and where it ends.
True, you have Massive Attack and Portishead and Maxinquaye, but is all downtempo/ambient/illbient sounding stuff Trip Hop?
Do you fit stuff like Everything but the Girl and Goldfrapp and the like in the same genre? Hell, I can post weird obscure Japanese stuff that may be Trip Hop, but I dunno.
Can somebody more knowledgeable break the genre down for a playa who's American mind is stuck on music genres with "-Hop" at the end strictly having either somebody rhyming or DJing?
a style of dance music, usually slow in tempo, that combines elements of hip-hop and dub reggae with softer, more ambient sounds.
Trip hop music fuses several styles and has much in common with other genres; it has several qualities similar to ambient music and its drum-based breakdowns share characteristics with hip hop. It also contains elements of R&B, dub and house, as well as other electronic music. Trip hop can be highly experimental in nature.
but yes it can be difficult to classify some of these music.

Probably the GOAT genre.
