He was there the first time because TK put his foot in his mouth about someone coming through The Forbidden Door, and the other times he was there was to promote the Forbidden Door PPV. He never had a full-blown storyline in any of his AEW appearances. In the longshot he goes to AEW, there would be actual creative plans in place other than representing a different company.
