I think the real problem is just WHO his alter ego is, not the fact that he has one and it’s explored thru the story. I think people that have a problem with Batman more have a problem with who’s behind the mask not what that mask does or is suppose to do and represent.

Bruce is needed, because although he's a hero he's almost as unhinged as the people he goes after. He's like Dexter, but doesn't actually kill. That dichotomy to hold up a normal life, but run the streets several nights a week being a vigilante is pretty psychotic if you think about it.
