which mixtapes are u refering to...The original mixtapes with songs from various artists, blends and scratching...Or demos which have been name changed to "mixtapes" in the new millinium??

these STREET ALBUMS are nothing more than promotional material for the artists....
when i think of mixtapes i think of the RON G's..KID CAPRIS....and even the JAM PONY MIXTAPES in miami...where it's a compliaton of songs with mixing , blending and deejay voiceovers and scratching.....
these "demos" or "albums before the albums" is just artists way of garnering the intrest of not only fans but the record companies they are trying to persuade in getting a deal for or opening a budget for a project that's been sitting on the shelf.....
so it's the INDUSTRY that has devalued HIP HOP ...not these "street albums" nor the "Artists" themselves.....when u live in an era where the A&R is no longer a productive role within the industry and labels expect artists to build thier own buzz and do everything on thier own....cause the labels are CHEAP they NO LONGER INVEST IN THE ARTISTS THESE DAYS...THIER IS NO MORE ARTIST DEVELOPMENT
SO THE ARTIST HAS NO CHOICE BUT TO DEVELOP HIMSELF ON THESE "SO-CALLED MIXTAPES"

Yea, I agree with blackslash. Mixtapes have devalued hip-hop. I think of street albums as mixtapes just because they're both free.
When mixtape really blew up, it broke down the barriers of entry into hip hop. i.e., major record deals/distribution/marketing. It allowed artists to put out the music they wanted with no help from a label. With the Internet being so big, every artist has an outlet to push their music. This in turn means over saturation. More rappers and music out = less value.
It also made the job of labels easier because they don't really have to search and develop rappers for the most part anymore. They can just sit back and choose from who has the hottest songs. Which devalues hip-hop compared to other genres.

I definitely agree with this. Hiphop now is just sad, and it's not because of the mixtapes but idiotic fans that accept everything as good. The criteria for good rap music has fallen off so drastically that it's become a joke, an opportunity for every goofy idiot to rap and persuade enough idiots out there that it's actually good. This right now is the dark ages of Hiphop...commercialized, pop-like, with no message and with over-inflated egos of individuals that became succesful over night.

mixtapes have been carrying hip-hop for the past 10 years now. those tapes you mentioned and others are what hip-hop is all about.
now, as for those internet/industry plant rappers that get championed on here these days, those arent really mixtapes. theyre secret albums like dude implied near the top of the thread.
