Hell no

Only reason Premo is considered a "NY producer" is because it's mostly NY nikkaz that knew what to do with his sound

Nobody claimed he was from NY

Pac from NYC whether the west coast (or other places) like it or not

You wont see any traces of a west coast nikka in that nikka who starred in Juice or Above The Rim

So how many "random people" know that Gangstarr ain't from NY?

Follow up: and how many of them wouldn't classify them as an NY group?

just stop.....no group from the West could touch Wu tang in terms of popularity worldwide......NONE

smh at these West coast dudes and their constant inferiority complex at the East Coast..... The west coast had their run no doubt until Biggie came and crushed the buildings....NY dudes from the 80s Rakim, Kane, KRS still touring overseas on a regular while the West coast legends are on Law and Order or making movies......

The like of Run DMC LL Cool J were worldwide phenomenons before the likes of world class wreckin cru

you cant rewrite history no matter how much you may try,

"Biggie 'crushed the buildings'"...by making what he referred to as "The East Coast Chronic"?
Furthermore, at Biggie's height, what were the biggest songs? "Funkdafied", "Whoomp There It Is", "Tootsee Roll", and chit...

NY dudes from the 80's still touring overseas on the regular...that's nice...do they have labels over there? Like "DPG Japan"?

The likes of Run-DMC were worldwide phenomenons...who else was large "like" Run-DMC?

How many "random people" know who Gangstarr is is the question. Mostly hard cores know where they're from & Premo being from Texas.

The only one re-writing history here is you. Nobody from Wu tang even put up Coolio & Warren G numbers, let alone Pac & Snoop numbers :comeon: If Wu tang were so popular why did Dogg Food sell more than 36 chambers did? When the west was poppin them nikkas was second tier at best, fact.

at Biggies height the biggest song was one more chance remix friend worldwide..... WU Tang has a label overseas..... even the Lox....lol

From the 80s Run DMC, Public Enemy, LL cool J, Beastie boys , De La soul, to a lesser extent Eric B and Rakim ...... They were worldwide phenomenons before anyone from the West coast was even known outside of the US..... The first bonafide worldwide stars from the West were NWA ......

no one is trying to diminish the achievements of the West because they brought a whole new entire sound , flavour and direction, but to act as If it wasnt the East Coast that put hip hop on the map world wide is a straight out lie

i kinda get all the arguments made here

new york conceptualized, created, expanded and blew up rap

end of story

but the west coast did take it to another level, if we be honest with ourselves, but thats not to diminish what new york did

warren g and coolio alone sold just as much as bad boy and wu tang combined

no hate, just my 2 cents

I am not gonna say who were "worldwide phenomenons" in the 80's because I wasn't traveling like that then, were you?

But nah...Biggie cuts were not bigger than the ones I mentioned. Check them charts...

No one is denying that NY was the seed, but the West made it a tree.

Warren G and Coolio are both known for one song, and neither of them shyts (or albums for that matter) sold anything close to what Puff Mase or Big was selling

South wuz late in tha game

:mjlol: @ mid west

West coast made this rap shyt notorious

you laughing but the reason why the west coast blew up was because of that new & different "g-funk" sound, which in reality is a sound that originated on the east coast & midwest (p-funk)

I noticed not to many people in this thread are familiar with the 80's.....If we are talking popularizing Hip Hop you have to mention The Fat Boys ...Not one person mentioned the Fat Boys......Just the name alone was real popular in the 80's..... . Dudes in here talking about Pac and Snoop...NO!! Fat Boys..... Run DMC, Beastie Boys and Salt N Pepa were making pop noise first...LL Cool J was in the mix but he was more a Hip Hop superstar then pop star.........Then came Kid N Play, DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince, Tone Loc, Young MC and Hammer......DJ Jazzy Jeff and Fresh Prince were teen pop sensations......They had their own 1900 Hot Line in the late 80's....along with Milli Vanilli, New Kids On The Block and Alyssa Milano. I dont remember any other rapper in the late 80's who had a 1900 hundred hotline number...This was before Will even had a show......Mind you it was Hammer and Kid N Play who had the cartoon shows.....You cant have a cartoon show if u aren't popular..... Will Smith then took hip hop to another pop level with his television show in the early 90's The way I remember it, Tone Loc had more "pop" appeal then NWA...NWA were underground who just so happened to sell millions....they weren't on TV and radio like that in the late 80's but Tone Loc was......Hammer then came and took it to a whole nother level of popularity......If we are talkin popularizing NWA wouldnt even fall in the same category as the names mentioned above. This thread is full of people being biased and not objective....I noticed not one person mentioned 2 Live Crew who were selling platinum in the 80's as well. But like NWA they too were underground.....2 Live Crew and NWA were not getting airtime in the late 80's like that they were in the "underground" category yet they were selling millions.

Warren G and Coolio did not sell a combined total of 10 million records wtf

I just checked and they sold 5-6 million combined, the album Puff dropped in 97 sold more than both of them combined
