I thought KD was the only one who believed that. He's got stans who believe it too?

KD was arguably not even a top-3 defender on his own team. Being allowed to roam and fill up the stat sheet while everyone else takes on the toughest defensive responsibilities doesn't make you a DPOY, and everyone knows that.

Draymond is the rim protector, the best interior and big man defender, calls out the defensive assignments, and is better at switching onto perimeter guys than KD is too.

Iggy is the one who guards the best player on the opposing team, and when healthy he's better at guarding swingmen than Durant. The Warriors' defense notably suffered when Iggy was out.

Klay is the best defender of guards on the team and the one often asked to shut down the other team's best perimeter player.

There's a reason why he got almost no DPOY votes and never has, why he didn't make an All-Defensive team and never has, why his defensive metrics look bad, why Golden State doesn't look particularly better on defense when he's on the floor, why LeBron still tears him up so easily, why Iggy and Draymond and Klay are still the ones trusted to guard the other team's best players and not him. He ain't that guy on defense.


Durant looks great because what he's asked to do is so easy. He has stud defenders all around him, gets the easiest assignments, and just has to clean up.

You want to bring up field goal percentages not knowing that you hurt your own argument. Wade was a slasher, KD takes jump shots and still managed to have a similar percentage

I mean KD is arguably the most gifted scorer and DWade probably wouldnt be top 10 in that regard. Just because your style of play was elite in a different era doesnt mean you dont factor in that the other side thrives in that aspect. KD came up in college and NBA at the tail end of that same era, and 3 pt shooting was still something he routinely practiced at even though he could get his spot against just about anything based on his quick first step off the dribble and his length. Im sure nikkas was in Wade's ear telling him he should learn how to at least be league average shooting outside for years, it was something they told Kobe in the mid 2000s.

Wade was a great acrobatic finisher but I feel you discrediting Kevin's slashing ability just cause he doesnt do it incredibly athletically or something. Peak Wade is better in that regard, but would you say the margin is wider than the shooting crevasse between em? Id also give "picking your spot on the floor" and ability to score in ISO to KD which pretty much gives every scoring attribute to the guy

At the end of the day the stats (for wades peak) show even with KDs shooting ability that the results aren’t that different. I don’t care how you do it as long as it gets done. I will admit KD is a more versatile defender, even if wade is better at it.

I see this talking point brought up quite often - he is actually the third best defender (Klay's not better), and that's no mark against his defense (although it can be inconsistent), it's just that Draymond is one of the greatest defensive anchors in history, and Iggy is one of the greatest perimeter defenders in history.
