The most offensive part about Trump's comments today wasn't the word "shythole". It was the word "Why".

“Why are we having all these people from shythole countries come here?”

Do people even really understand what our president is saying?

Look, I'm not angry because he calls places "shytholes". I'm a first generation immigrant. I come from a shythole. I lived 10 years in a shythole. I'll freely call it a shythole. I won't get offended if you call it a shythole! It's a shythole! Happy?

But how DARE he use my origin as an excuse to demand an additional reason to explain my presence here? Why is it up to me (but not say, a white Norwegian) to provide some extra level of justification for why I deserve the chance to be an American?

If these places really are shytholes, shouldn't there be an even greater obligation to help people who come from there, specifically because they're in the most danger?

Apparently not. Because Trump sincerely believes that some people do, and some people do not deserve the chance to be Americans, and your birthplace (and by extension, your race) is a key deciding factor in whether you deserve the chance to be an American. And it just so happens that the "right" places happen to be white.

Notice that he did not ask "Why are we letting in poor people?" or "Why are we letting in people without degrees?" or "Why are we letting in people with criminal histories" or "Why are we letting in people who refuse to learn English?".

No, let's cut the crap, already, because deep down, we know damn well that he's not talking about merit, or even about your place of origin. After everything you've seen, who do you think Trump is more likely to feel is more deserving citizenship? One of those scary Muslims that are "taking over" Norway, or a white South African? Cuz I got a feeling that when he gets a look at those people, the calculus for determining whether their home countries count as "shytholes" suddenly changes.

Trump is practically saying "America is for white people. The rest are interlopers until proven otherwise. Until someone explains to me WHY they're even allowed here." Let's not forget either, that in this particular situation, he's not even talking about illegal immigrants. He doesn't get to even use that old fig-leaf.

He's talking about a reconfiguration of who we even allow the chance to become legal, through all the proper channels, not based on merit, not based on national security, not based on employability, but specifically targeted against the people he happens to hate.

And yet, the media is taking the bait. Already they rush to obfuscate the issue, to absolve him of the real evil of his comment by focusing on the "inappropriate word" he used.

Already, we're having these dumb conversations like "Well, he denied that he said that exact word, but he said she said that he did!" or "Well, to be fair, Haiti isn't exactly a nice place to live, he's just saying what everyone thinks privately, and he just chose a colorful word to describe it...", and instead of focusing on the racism, we just go "Oh, but look at the pretty beaches of Haiti! It's not a shythole! Look at the natural beauty and rich culture of-" SHUT THE fukk UP!

What bearing does that debate have on anything?!? As if Trump's greatest sin is his vocabulary and not watching the Travel Channel?

What our president said today isn't just boorish, it isn't just cruel. It betrays a deep and insidious level of racism that can only be described as white supremacy. Again. This is a pattern, don't forget. But in this instance, he is literally throwing a tantrum because the "wrong people" are enjoying the benefit of immigration.

And it is so depressing and so terrifying, that even Trump's opponents - the people who represent the best hope we got to survive this regime - are just gonna waltz past that and chide him for his language.

Trump is unfit to lead the country and will most likely resign before his first term ends, so set that aside for a second.....If left leaning posters revel in calling certain countries shytholes but get mad when the President calls their countries shytholes is that not hypocrisy? I'm just tired of this phony concern and outrage that always gets fed to the public and put on display day after day week after week.

Something I've noticed is that "immigrants" to America no matter who they are or where the come from are some of the most hypocritical and selfish people you could ever come across. I once sat with two co-workers, one from Haiti and one from St. Lucia and endured hearing them dog out Jamaican people for a good hour....but how much you wanna bet both of these people are mad at Trump right now? I've experienced the same type of shyt between different South Asian groups, it never ends. Well when you destabilize said countries for decades do not be surprised when they flee and enter your country. It's the same thing I say about the European migrant crisis. If you want to stop migration from these countries stop destabilizing them.
And if you do not understand the outrage from Trump shyt hole comment you are really dumb. He is essentially saying why should we accept immigrants from black countries and not Europe. He is using a white supremacist talking point to limit non white immigration to stem the demographics changes in this country. The White american population is declining because of a low birth rate,opioid crisis,high suicide rates. They fear being a minority. Trump simply is there last shot to stop the demographic tsunami hitting white America.

Human history has been one of repeated conquests of one people over another, way before the European white man was ever a factor. Framing the situation as White vs. Black is misplaced. Any given population at any given point in time will always put it's own interests over that of some foreign entity. On a macro level this applies to nation-states and on the micro level it applies to ethnic groups and affiliations which are rooted in things like language and culture. So while in an immediate sense it may be in the interests of these people to flock to America and other western societies in order to procure 3 of the 12 jewels (food, clothing, and shelter), it is equally in the interest of the receiving nation of being selective of who they allow to enter. At some point the people who are immigrating from these countries will have to make strides to better themselves instead of depending on others overseas to take care of them.

If you want to keep it all the way real, if a country like America were to seek a path where they can pay for some of their sins of the past, their first obligations would be to black American descendants of slaves and to the native american indians....and increased, unchecked immigration is a hamper on those efforts, since they will eat into resources that could be used to address that issue. Bottom line is the immigration issue can be cosmetically tied to "race" but when you really look at it it's much deeper than that.

Do you feel some one who supports significantly tightening immigration(in general) should reject proposals for such based purely on his(Trump) motives?

In general, I see nothing wrong with our immigration policy outside of enforcement against illegal immigration and also programs that minimize the competitive nature of salaries for American workers such as abuse of H1-B visas.

However, I’m at most apathetic towards the issue because i don’t have a dog in the fight personally. But I’m not in constant fear of an “invasion” like some scared midwestern cac who has never seen a non-white in their life.

It takes forever to be naturalized and the vetting procedure can take up to two years to complete. shyt is thorough enough.

Secondly, the common “they took er jerbs “ argument has been proven false, in general. While certain industries are impacted and American workers are pushed out, the common fallacious thinking is that jobs are a fixed resource when in reality, job availability scales with population, economic growth, and demand for goods. So in a lot of towns and cities where they had an influx immigrants, while the immigrants may dominate a particular job, say a factory, as a result they also circulate more money in the local economy and other jobs in other sectors such as service grow to meet the higher demand.

I don’t view the above necessarily as a good thing by the way but the argument has more nuance worth pointing out. Typically in these cases, research has shown high school educated and lower are typically who suffer the most and I agree this needs to be addressed.

To answer your question my directly, I really don’t understand the anti immigration attitude in general though outside of the above scenario and it seems like most of it is driven by the powers that be by racism. I don’t have a problem with restrictions, within reason, but this is a solution in search of a problem right now. I don’t think our immigration policy outside of the two things I mentioned at the beginning of my posts is a major issue.
