its interesting to me that noone considers the name "freemason" and just "mason"

during the renaissance "masons" were employed by the church and the kingdoms to build a variety of things (many to count)

and the advent of the "freemasons" were just builders who wished to build without kingly/churchly mandate

so in essence the orders of masons is still operating with that in mind

depending on your belief that is good and/or bad. Technically masonry (cunning builders) goes back to ancient egypt and the tool age (or what remains of it)
