Also because happenings in the US aren't *necessarily* newsworthy to people living in other countries so there's more of a relevance filter than "Trump tweeted out some more stupid bullshyt today"

Just a technicality, but I think a big problem is their need for narrative, as in: any rational narrative. The one they prefer is whichever best conveys that the world can be explained logically. Since that's not possible, the paper proceeds beyond editing the writing, to editing reality itself.
