they need the trump wing, and they need the credible mitch wing
Rs best chance at gaining ground in 2022 was for Trump to be involved and back moderate Rs in competitive races
that way Rs could maybe get BOTH of 1.) Trump-type margins by MAGA voters in rural areas, and 2.) improved margins from suburbs by convincing those voters their candidates can be moderate, and not completely batshyt crazy...they needed this balancing act...
...well, throw 2.) out the window now. Rs doubling down on 1.), and that alone is NOT enough to gain ground in 2022 even if they match Trump’s margins for those voters - and I have doubts they can even match MAGA/rural-voter margins in a midterm cycle without Trump actually on the ticket...so Rs might just be fukked
As wonderful it is to see the GOP rip itself apart it is still concerning how much of a impact he can have on future elections. My greatest concern is not the impact he will have on the federal level but in local/state elections.
