She actually started writing the series in 1989. So I'd guess the Trump-like president was inspired by a vision of Reagan-on-steroids more than anything else. Like if this is what they'll do under prosperity, then how far will they go when shyt really hits the fan? It shows you how predictable and trite fascism is when even a sci-fi author can guess your slogan over 20 years in advance.

The 2nd book wasn't finished until 1997, so by then I'll bet the rise of Newt Gingrich and his "Contract with America" crew also informed the narrative.


It was supposed to be a 5-book series but she got writer's block on the third book and then died an early death, which is heartbreaking. Personally I liked the 1st book a ton more than the 2nd book, Lauren's perspective was the only one I cared about so bringing in the other stories in the 2nd book was a bit of a waste. I would have preferred she devoted more time to Lauren's struggle within dystopia and stretched that story out for an entire trilogy.

I didn't remember Butler giving President Jarret any anti-black statements. There might be some that I'm just not recalling, but I thought Trump was a lot more overtly pro-White than Jarret was, Jarret was more of a religious extremist. But there was a subtext in the novel that the sort of people attracted to Jarret definitely included white supremacists.
