If you had any doubts about Trump sticking with his dangerous plan for America, say hello to his VP pick.

All Trump can run on now is that he's anti-free trade and is unpredictable. It might work but I don't know if independents are gonna be lining up for an otherwise hard right wing ticket.

I agree, Pence was bad pick.
Yeah, the more I'm thinking about it, the less I like it. It frames Trump as the stereotypical Republican. Pence shores up that traditional Republican base, but I think Trump could have consolidated that group by picking Newt, and he wouldn't have to defend all the stupid crap that Pence has in his history. Pence is better than Christie, but worse than Newt. Trump didn't have many options tho :yeshrug:

I think he's gonna hammer the "Law & Order" angle from now on. I think that will be the dominant theme in his playbook going forward. These terrorist attacks have people questioning the status quo, and Trump has positioned himself as the strongman candidate. If there's another large scale attack between now and November, especially in the US, it'll severely tilt the scales to Trump.

Yeah I mean looking at the options:

1. Newt - the best pick, insider cred with outsider cred as well. Known as a man of ideas and passing stuff with a D prez
2. Pence - choice of the establishment, may appease Never Trump but it sort of makes Trump lose the appeal that made him win the primary in the first place. I'm not sure Never Trump is worth appeasing
3. Christie - would've been the pick pre-Bridgegate but probably has too much baggage now
4. Lt. Gen Flynn - Trump was never realistically going to pick a registered Dem to be VP
5. Ivanka - I would've been fine with her and the country seems to love her but may of gotten intense charges of nepotism
6. Rick Scott - too unpopular in FL

Most politicians know that they have to turn out their base to win. The idea of expanding the voter base is limited to just a few competitive states. Trump cannot afford to ignore the conservatives in his party by trying to make a play for a completely new voter coalition. The demographics are predictable enough at this point that he is running an election strategy focused on the Midwest and PA. The bigger problem for him was that his options for VP had been severely limited that it had come down to Newt, Pence and a registered Democrat. Even with all the talk about not being a traditional GOP leader he has been put under enough pressure to cater to that base on issues like Planned Parenthood, HB2, ethanol subsidies.
