Democrats solution for crime is too soft I will agree...as a father that's my biggest beef with them. Yes it's a systemic and social issue but it doesn't mean we let people run wild in the hood because it's people from the hood that suffer most.
At the same time Republicans only solution is to put more bodies in prison so their buddies in the private prison sector can make more money. If you try and get them to address the issue at the root by investing more into schools and programs in the inner city they scoff and chuckle.
We need to be heavy handed with violent crime but we also need to admit that throwing people in prison is just throwing buckets of water out of a boat with a leak without addressing the leak. People like to say "it's the parents" but most of the time with young kids bugging out, they come from parents that were also in the street bugging out. So it's a cycle that can only be stopped early while the kids are in school. Once they leave school it's 100 times harder to reach them or their parents. But it costs money and Republicans see money spent on the ghetto as money down the drain.
Unless of course it's money spent on police and private prisons...they are all for that.
